Perhaps this girl, probably born between 1835 and 1838, would some day marry a Civil War soldier. But the war was still some years in the future.

This is one of my favorite images. It's hard to stare into her haunting face and realize that she was actually looking at a large wooden box with a big brass lens on it's front. What was the reason for her sad expression?
